Uncle Roger's Restaurant Review: Is It FUIYOH Worthy or Not?

Writer: Find Fun FoodFind Fun Food

Who is Uncle Roger?

If you love food reviews and comedy, you've probably heard of Uncle Roger—the internet sensation known for his hilarious takes on cooking, especially egg fried rice. Played by stand-up comedian Nigel Ng, Uncle Roger's signature phrases like "FUIYOH" and "Haiyaa" have made him a global icon in the food world. His critiques of celebrity chefs and their cooking techniques have earned him millions of fans, so when he launched his restaurant, expectations were high.

With the buzz surrounding Uncle Roger's restaurant, Elieen and Adrian from Find Fun Food couldn't resist a visit during their KL trip. Arriving on a weekday afternoon after 3 PM, they expected a quieter atmosphere, only to find a queue already forming. The anticipation was palpable, a testament to the restaurant's popularity!

What We Ordered

Since we weren't entirely sure about the quality of the food, we decided to start with a few key dishes:

  • Uncle Roger Egg Fried Rice (Non-Spicy) – RM16

  • Fuiyoh Crispy Chicken – RM27

  • Uncle Roger Favourite (Perfumed Iced Lemon Tea) – RM9 each (shared between two)

These seemed to be some of the most talked-about items on the menu, so we figured they would be the best representation of the restaurant's offerings.

Our Food Review on Uncle Roger's Restaurant

Uncle Roger Egg Fried Rice

Let's be honest—this was the dish we were most excited about. After all, Uncle Roger has made a name reviewing egg fried rice! The good news? It was aromatic and flavourful. The not-so-good news? It wasn't exactly mind-blowing. While tasty, it lacked that signature wok hei, which would have taken it up a notch. The rice grains were well-separated, and the seasoning was balanced, but nothing was extraordinary. If you're a fan of fried rice, it's enjoyable but doesn't quite reach legendary status.

Fuiyoh Crispy Chicken

The crispy chicken was a win in terms of taste. Well-marinated with a delicious garlicky flavour, it was enjoyable. However, at RM27 for just eight small popcorn-sized pieces, it felt a little pricey for the portion given. The batter was crispy and light, not overly greasy, which was a plus. The seasoning was strong but not overwhelming, and it paired well with the dipping sauce provided. While tasty, the portion size leaves much to be desired for the price point.

Perfumed Iced Lemon Tea

The perfumed iced lemon tea was a delightful surprise! Instead of a standard iced lemon tea, we were treated to a subtle lemongrass aroma that added a unique twist. It was refreshing and complemented the meal perfectly. The balance of sweetness and acidity was just right, making it a standout thirst-quencher. It's these unexpected touches that elevate the overall dining experience.

Ambience & Experience

The restaurant's decor is a vibrant celebration of Uncle Roger's signature orange colour. The bright and cheerful interior design, complete with fun elements inspired by his online persona, creates an engaging, themed dining experience. It's a place that's sure to excite and entertain, although it's more suited for a quick bite than a leisurely meal. The seating is close, and the noise level can be high during peak hours, adding to the lively atmosphere.

Service-wise, the staff was friendly but seemed overwhelmed by the constant flow of customers. It took some time for our food to arrive, but given the crowd, it was understandable. If you're in a hurry, this might not be the best spot for a quick meal. The restaurant thrives on its themed experience rather than fine dining-level service.

Final Verdict

Overall, Elieen and Adrian would rate their experience as 6.5/10.

It's a theme restaurant, so they weren't expecting gourmet-level cooking. The food is decent but doesn't quite live up to the hype. While enjoyable, the egg fried rice could use more wok hei. The crispy chicken is tasty but overpriced for its portion size. The perfumed iced lemon tea was a pleasant surprise, adding a unique twist to a classic drink.

Would they go again? Maybe, but mainly for the novelty rather than the food itself! It's worth a visit if you're an Uncle Roger fan and want to experience the brand in a new way. You'll likely enjoy it if you go in with reasonable expectations—understanding that this is more of a fun dining experience than a top-tier culinary spot.

If you're looking for authentic, high-quality wok-fried dishes, you might be better off seeking a local hawker stall or Chinese restaurant with a strong reputation. However, if you're a fan of Uncle Roger and want to say you've dined at his restaurant, it's worth checking out at least once.
