While staying in Kuala Lumpur, Eileen and Adrian discovered Hock Kee Kopitiam 福气安康 in Kota Damansara, located close to their hotel and known for its positive reviews. Curious about its reputation, we chose to visit and see for ourselves.

Hock Kee initially gives off a charm similar to that of the well-known Oriental Café, with comparable color themes and a wide variety of dishes. Nonetheless, Hock Kee presents a somewhat more upscale atmosphere, creating a warm and welcoming environment to unwind and savor a meal.

The Taste Test at of Hock Kee Kopitiam

To start, we sampled one of their egg tarts, a popular delicacy known for its flaky crust and creamy custard filling, to compare it with Oriental Café's renowned version. The egg tart from Hock Kee, while still enjoyable, did not quite reach the same heights in terms of flavor complexity and richness that we experienced at Oriental Café.

Personally, we found Oriental's egg tarts to be more flavourful, with a velvety custard that had a hint of sweetness perfectly balanced by a touch of saltiness, elevating the overall taste. However, Hock Kee's version still offered a decent bite, featuring a crisp outer shell that crumbled delightfully with each bite, and a custard filling that, while not as vibrant, provided a satisfying texture and a mild taste that many would still appreciate.

Adrian ordered a hot Kopi-C, a popular coffee drink that combines strong coffee with evaporated milk, which was fragrant and robust—a comforting brew for any coffee lover. The rich aroma wafting up from the cup was inviting, and the first sip revealed a deep, bold flavor profile that was both energising and soothing at the same time. The balance of sweetness from the milk perfectly complemented the coffee's natural bitterness, making it a delightful choice for the morning or an afternoon pick-me-up.

The Nutella French Toast was another highlight of our meal, presented beautifully and generously topped with slabs of butter that melted into the warm bread. Each slice was filled with rich Nutella spread, creating a luscious experience that was hard to resist. It struck a delightful balance between indulgence and comfort, as the warm, fluffy bread paired beautifully with the creamy, chocolate-hazelnut filling, making it a dish that felt both decadent and satisfying. The combination of flavors and textures in this dish made it a standout item on the menu, perfect for those looking to treat themselves to something special.

Saving Room for More

Though we were tempted by the variety on offer, we decided to hold off on trying more dishes as we had plans for a hearty siew yoke lunch. That said, Hock Kee's menu has piqued our interest, and we look forward to returning to sample their signature offerings in the future.

If you're in the Kota Damansara area, Hock Kee Kopitiam is worth a visit for its inviting atmosphere and promising menu. Whether you're after a comforting cup of coffee or a sweet treat, it's a spot that blends tradition with a touch of modern flair.
